欧文·白璧德（1865-1933），美国著名文学评论家，“新人文主义”文学批评领袖。自1894年起在哈佛任教直至去世，其间创办了比较文学系，影响遍及哲学、历史、政治、教育等各个领域。他极具世界主义眼光，最早宣扬破除“西方中心主义”；正是由于他的思想与中国儒家学说有着多方面的认同，上个世纪20年代初创办的《学衡》杂志和因此而得名的“学衡派”，以及此后以梁实秋为代表的“新月派”都与白璧德的思想有着极深的渊源。将近一个世纪过去后，我们已可以更加心平气和地看待“学衡派”与胡适、鲁迅等人的论战。更重要的是，中国政治、经济、社会的发展已再次将“学衡派”提过的问题摆在我们面前：中国在继续坚定地融入世界的同时，如何走出文化激进主义的误区？我们能否创立与现代性相适应的中国政治、经济与社会模式？这无疑将进一步激发我们的反思。
